Lüdinghausen local pride
Lüdinghausen is the headquarters of ARTIQO GmbH – and a badminton stronghold. The first team of SC Union 08 Lüdinghausen has been playing successfully in the 1st Bundesliga for 24 years – and has been wearing the ARTIQO logo on its back since autumn 2023. We asked what makes badminton so attractive, what importance this sport has for a city like Lüdinghausen and how important sponsors are.
When you heard “badminton” did you think of badminton in the schoolyard? Forget it. Badminton is the fastest sport ever. “A smash hit reaches a top speed of 400 kilometers per hour. Tennis or golf can’t compete. For this sport you need quick reactions and stamina. The back, shoulders and knees are significantly stressed. Especially the knees,” says Michael Schnaase, describing his sport. The first chairman of the entire SC Union 08 Lüdinghausen club is also the head of the badminton department, team manager of the first badminton team, young coach, and he himself was German badminton champion more than 20 times.
Aha, the knees. That will be the reason for the ARTIQO jersey sponsorship of the 1st Bundesliga team! “No,” laughs Ulrich Bücken, Managing Director of ARTIQO GmbH, and shakes his head. “The club does a great job of promoting youth and young talent, which is important for the social life of the city. We would like to support that as a local company.”
Great promotion of young talent
As the badminton state base for North Rhine-Westphalia, the club cooperates closely with local schools and organizes working groups to introduce young talent to the sport. “We want to ensure that one or two local young athletes always play with the professionals in the Bundesliga team,” affirms Schnaase. The 2nd team also plays in the 2nd Bundesliga. Young people who are not yet ready for the 1st league can grow into the 2nd league, according to the club’s concept.
A lot of work for a small town
As a Bundesliga player, SC Union 08 Lüdinghausen organizes national and international tournaments. “It attracts spectators. We are a major advertising medium for the city,” says Schnaase proudly. In order to be worthy of the Bundesliga, all Bundesliga games that take place in Lüdinghausen must be broadcast live on the internet. “It’s a lot of effort for us. For the broadcast, we have to play on mats that cover the lines in the hall so that the cameras can follow the ball,” explains the club chairman. So it takes a lot of volunteers to take care of the transmission technology and the setup. “Luckily things are going well in Lüdinghausen – that’s what creates local pride!”
Extremely important: sponsorship
In addition to volunteers and helping hands, money is also needed. “As a club with 1st league professional sports and the associated obligations, we are happy to have any sponsor,” says Schnaase about local sponsors and supporters such as ARTIQO GmbH. The club needs thousands of euros a year just for the balls. “A shuttlecock like this breaks quickly,” says Schnaase – no wonder, at a top speed of 400 km/h.
